General Information

The summer school “Big Data and Machine Learning for Chemistry” will take place from June 7th to June 9th 2021. It will be hosted on the EPFL campus (Lausanne, Switzerland). As COVID-19 regulations are constantly changing, we will only know the exact format of the school closer to the event’s date. If regulations allow, we will host as many student participants (up to 30) and guest speakers as possible. If not, the school will take place fully online.

We encourage students, especially from EPFL and ETH Zürich, to register for in-person attendance. One of the objectives of the summer school is to enhance exchange between EPFL and ETHZ, as well as external, students. We believe this can only partly be achieved through remote participation. In-person attendance will enable students to network with other participants and with the speakers who will be able to be present on campus.

Each in-person participant will have to pay a unique participation fee, according to the table below:

  • Doctoral students: CHF 150;
  • Master students: CHF 50.

The participation fees will cover ETHZ and external students’ accommodation costs (reimbursement for 2 nights accommodation, up to CHF 120), a social networking dinner, coffee breaks and a poster session aperitif.

Students who register for in-person attendance will be asked to pay the participation fee through bank transfer (details will be sent separately) within two weeks from registration. Only participants who subscribed and paid the fee will be registered to the summer school by the EPFL Registrar’s Office. Should COVID-19 regulations prevent in-person attendance, the full participation fee will be reimbursed.

Up to 30 students will be able to register for in-person attendance. Although the summer school is open to students from other Swiss and international institutions, the body of participants must consist of at least two thirds of students from within the ETH Domain. Registration for in-person attendance will therefore occur on a first-come-first-served basis.

Students who will not be able to register for in-person attendance due to the limited spaces available, and to travel restrictions, will be able to register for online attendance. Details on how to join remotely will be sent separately closer to the event’s date. No participation fee will be charged.

Doctoral candidates may receive 1 ECTS credit for participation to the summer school. ECTS credits can only be given to doctoral students who paid their participation fee (in case of in-person attendance), followed the entire summer school, and passed the final examination. This will consist of a written report on one of the sessions of the school. For EPFL Master students, it is their sections that decide whether or not the ECTS credits count for their Master studies. It is therefore up to them to contact their sections. Details of the written report will be given during the summer school.

In-person attendees are encouraged to present a poster. A poster session and aperitif will take place in the evening of the first day. A prize for the best poster will be awarded. To register for a poster presentation, a short abstract of the poster must be submitted no later than one month before the beginning of the summer school.
